About This Treatment

North Star Dentistry offers professional-grade teeth whitening that delivers results measurably beyond anything available over the counter. We provide both in-office whitening — achieving shades up to eight levels lighter in a single session — and custom take-home tray systems for patients who prefer gradual, controlled whitening at their own pace. Every whitening treatment begins with a shade assessment and a check for contraindications such as active decay or exposed roots, ensuring the process is both safe and effective for your specific dentition.

Frequently Asked Questions

Some patients experience temporary sensitivity during or after whitening — typically described as brief, sharp sensations when consuming hot or cold foods. This is caused by hydrogen peroxide temporarily increasing dentinal tubule permeability and usually resolves within 24–48 hours. We recommend a potassium nitrate desensitising gel for patients with a history of sensitivity, applied in the trays before and after treatment.

Whitening agents only affect natural tooth enamel — they have no effect on porcelain, composite resin, or ceramic restorations. If you have visible crowns, veneers, or fillings in your smile zone, we will discuss this during your shade assessment so you can make an informed decision about whether whitening alone will achieve the result you're looking for, or whether a combined approach is more appropriate.

The 48 hours immediately following a whitening treatment are the most critical — enamel pores are temporarily more open, making teeth more susceptible to re-staining from coffee, red wine, tea, tomato-based sauces, and dark berries. We provide every whitening patient with a printed 'white diet' guide and recommend using a straw for cold beverages during this window.
